Meet our 22/23 Team

Name: Kornelija, President

What's your story?

Hey! I’m Kornelija from Lithuania and Ireland. I’ve moved around quite a bit and landed in Amsterdam when I started studying PPLE.
I’m an innately restless person, so I’m always doing things that get me up on my feet, whether it’s dancing or boxing.
I joined YOUth ACT last year as a community coordinator and was inspired by our mission so much that I stuck around for round two.

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

I love projects that focus on gender equality and LGBTQ+ issues. In Amsterdam I try to keep up with the work of HeForShe x UvA, the Neighbourhood Feminists and Periodic.

What's your story?

Hi there, my name is Sam and I’m from a small town somewhere in the southern end of the Netherlands (you wouldn’t know it). I moved to Amsterdam in September to pursue an MA in European Studies at the UvA.
During my gap year last year, I felt the need to more substantially be a part of change-making and social justice organisations, and through a friend, I got a hold of YOUth ACT - needless to say I’m super excited to be the Legal Director this year.

Guilty pleasure?

I’m obsessed with competitive Mario Kart Wii videos on YouTube, can guarantee you there is no better way to waste your time. Also: the movie Joe’s Apartment (1996).

Sam

Name: Ramya, Media and Marketing Director

What's your story?

Hey! I’m Ramya originally from the Philippines but lived most of my life in Vietnam and somehow found my way to the Netherlands. I found YOUth ACT last year, joining as a community coordinator, and was lucky enough to stay another year now as part of the board leading the Media Team. I’m excited to continue the work all the teams before us have done and grow the organisation with a whole new group of amazing people.

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

My favourite social projects are education-focused. NGOs like Room to Read, Teach for the Philippines and Save the Children who all aim to empower children and provide equal access to education in my country. Education-focused programs build the foundation for the next generations and ensure each child grows up with the same opportunities as everyone else which is the first step in creating a better future.

Guilty pleasure?

Hamilton. I’m currently writing this as the broadway soundtrack plays in the background for the millionth time.

Ramya

Name: Ausaf, Media Team, Social Media Analyst/Planner

What's your story?

As I chased a kite in my Lahore neighborhood, I pictured myself flying in its place, looking beyond the suburbs, beyond the Ravi, into unknown realms of strange people and delightful customs.

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

Plastic free oceans. We need to save the baby turtles.

Ausaf

Name: Dila, Media Team, Content Creator

What's your story?

Halo! Dila from Indonesia here. I moved to Amsterdam last year to pursue my Master's degree in Culture, Organization and Management at VU. Now that I graduated, I'm so excited for what's to come! I'm glad that I decided to join YOUth ACT as it gives me the chance to meet more people from all around the world. I cherish people. I think people are very unique and I believe that everyone has a story to tell, and I am all ears to listen!

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

I haven't done many projects in my life. But I've always loved animal welfare causes, and I really hope I can get involved one day. As a cat person I really support the Four Paws campaign called #ProtectMillions which aims to end the dog and cat meat trade. Growing up in Indonesia, I've heard a lot of news about dogs and cats being stolen, brutally killed and traded for their meat. It really upsets me, I couldn't imagine if that happened to my cats.

What's your story?

Heyo! I’m Anthony, Egyptian & (un)fortunately American. I love music and water plz send me your fav playlist and beach

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

All projects Decolonization & Decapitalization of people, land, and animals. for example Free Palestine Free Ukraine Free the Uyghurs Free the Amazon Save the turtles & bees Give access of natural resources back to the beautiful African countries and their people Slavery still exists Fuck these multinationals Fuck the USA Fuck every ‘big’. History ain’t history people are still living it!! Thank u for coming to my ted rant

Anthony

Name: Ana, Action Director

What's your story?

Hi everyone! My name is Ana born but not fully raised in Mexico as I lived in every NAFTA country before coming to the Netherlands. I arrived in Amsterdam in 2020 to pursue my BA in Political Science t to understand and dismantle the responsible systems of oppression.

Name: Konstanze, Action Team, Conference Coordinator

What's your story?

Hi! I am originally from Austria, where I’ve lived all my life before moving to Amsterdam 1 ½ years ago. This is my first year at YouthAct.
I am currently a second year PPLE student, majoring in law. In my free time I love painting, and watching all different kinds of movies.
I’m beyond thrilled to organize this year’s conference, collaborate with the entire team and have the ability to actually make a difference.

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

Some social projects that I'm particularly interested in right now are those that aim to fight human rights violations all over the world. I recently came across a really cool initiative called Art for Humanity, which is a charity that raises awareness of human rights by using art as a tool to spread the message. There are also some cool Netherlands-based initiatives, like Swapshop, which encourages sustainable and slow fashion.

Guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure is definitely watching really bad Christmas rom-coms. It’s probably my favourite part about December. :)

Konstanze

Name: Yasmin, Action Team, Conference Coordinator

What's your story?

Hey! I’m Yasmin from Istanbul, I lived in Brussels before moving to Amsterdam. It’s my first year with YOUth ACT and I can’t wait to organise the upcoming conference with the action team. I love travelling and experiencing new cultures. I’m excited to make an impact while working with diverse teams.

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

My favourite social projects are the ones which offer working opportunities to socially excluded and/or vulnerable groups. Some examples are Manos del Uruguay, La Fageda, Abrazo Cultural. I like these projects as they take a different approach to offer quality products/services to everyone. As it can be difficult to find a job and make a living in certain circumstances it’s always encouraging to have a place where you feel welcome.

Guilty pleasure?

George Michael (or WHAM!): I might be too young to be a fan but I love his songs.

Yasmin

Name: Elena, Action Team, Starter Pack Coordinator

What's your story?

Hi, I’m Elena and I moved to Amsterdam last year. Originally I’m from Italy, even though I lived in the US for a while. This is my first year at YOUTH ACT and I’m excited to partake in this organization which stands for matters I value and allows me to be part of a young and diverse community.

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

I’m into fashion, therefore the initiative many brands are taking in order to become more sustainable and inclusive is one I strongly support. I also conducted research on Prada and how even high-end designers are trying to be eco-friendly and aware of body inclusivity providing sizes that can fit every body.

Guilty pleasure?

Walking around the city at night while dancing in the streets with my airpods on.

Elena

Name: Emma, Community Director

What's your story?

Hello there! I’m Emma and I am from Germany and Ghana. Unlike most of the YA members,I am not a resident of Amsterdam.
I study International Relations & Organizations at Leiden University and I’m currently doing a minor in Global Health at VU Amsterdam.
Unfortunately, being a community doctor is not just about socialising and partying :(
But jokes aside, I joined YA because I wanted to be part of an inspiring organisation that consists of members who are socially-aware and who I can call my friends eventually.

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

As someone who tries to be aware of everything, it‘s hard to pinpoint one specific social project. However, I can say that projects that empower people, who are usually disregarded or or oppressed by society.

Guilty pleasure?

Reading philosophy papers and casually leading people into an existential crisis during small talk.

Emma

Name: Raagini, Community Team, Archive Coordinator

What's your story?

Hello, I’m Raagini from India. I stumbled upon YOUth ACT while in search for a space that would connect me with other young people passionate to make social change, and facilitate my desire to contribute to meaningful research and education. I’m excited to be a part of the team, proactively collaborating with other members to put out some good into the world!

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

Social projects that fuel my passions are ones that are based on building community within historically marginalised groups, collaboratively lifting each other up. One of my favourite social projects is called NEthing, which is a feminist collective/project fully comprising of women from North East India, that hosts a learning center, performance arts-related space, bookstore and workshops in an intersectional feminist pursuit.

Guilty pleasure?

Acting like life is a movie, (mostly inappropriately) making absurd background sounds to real-life situations.

Raagini

Name: Francisca, Archive Coordinator

What's your story?

Hello, I am Francisca, and I am from Lisbon. I moved to Amsterdam in 2020 to do my Bachelor’s in Political Science at the University of Amsterdam. I joined YOUth Act because I wanted to think critically and write about topics surrounding social topics to a wide audience.

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

My favorite social cause is to work towards women’s empowerment on a local and global scales.

Francisca

Name: Bharathi, Community Team, Vriend Coordinator

What's your story?

I’m an Indian. But I think I do well as a global citizen. Tsk. I moved to NL in early ‘22. Coming from a country that has seen it all, lived it all and is still continuing to struggle and grow through it all, it was essential for me to be a part of a community that would help me humbly unlearn, understand, learn and most of all, grounded. I started with YOUthACT in October as a LinkedIn coordinator. Comfort zone, what? I’m pretty much a newbie here. I’m in love with my team and the community I’m part of. I love that I am working towards a collective goal of global well-being. There’s so much in the world to care about, and we will start taking care of them little by little, one by one.

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

Causes that aim to work towards climate change, animal welfare, illiteracy, lack of education, and unemployment issues reach me amongst others as I have witnessed them around me while growing up.

Guilty pleasure?

Bingeing on cheese balls and ice cream when I feel down.
OH, COME ON! LET THE POOR GIRL HAVE HER CHEESEBALLS AND ICE-CREAM.

Bharathi

Name: Jimi, Community Team, Events Coordinator

What's your story?

Hello, I’m Jimi from South Korea. I first heard of YOUth ACT through my friend and after joining their events and learning more about the mission of this organization, i was motivated to join the team and help other young people such as myself, bring awareness and take action to make social change. I am very happy to be part of this inclusive and caring community, and i hope to create many many impactful events in the future.

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

I am interested in social groups that help bring awareness to the history and marginalized groups resulted from war or any act of violence and exploitation. Groups such as Liberty in North Korea and support group for the Comfort women, Heeum. Also, I am interested in projects that try to bring awareness of reducing material waste and the importance of maintaining a sustainable lifestyle such as TasteBeforeYouWaste which is based in Amsterdam. Favorite apps of mine i like to use are TooGoodToGo and Vinted.

Jimi

Name: Irene, Community Team, Events Coordinator

What's your story?

As I always liked to grow with small but relevant and closely knit communities, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and see how it is to work with NGOs that do other things than academic debate. I stumbled upon YouthAct last year as I was one of the spoken-word artists invited to perform for our annual art show. The empowering and tender atmosphere of the event grew on me, so I decided I also want to create events that enwrap people in an atmosphere that makes you believe in opening all kinds of doors and safe spaces for people just as entangled in life as you.

Favourite social/environmental project and why?

I I think everything I care for is embedded in intersectional green feminism which focuses on deconstructing that everything has to have a value that can be monetized or capitalized upon. The future is the vulnerable freedom of personhood.

Guilty pleasure?

I actively work on not feeling guilt from pleasure, but probably the amount of manga I have bought in the last year is that. Nobody does fictional men like Japanese or Korean magakas do.
